AdvaMed Welcomes Introduction of Bipartisan Medtech Electronic Labeling Bill
Washington, D.C. – Scott Whitaker, president and CEO of AdvaMed, the Medtech Association, the world’s biggest trade association representing medtech innovators, today made the following comment on the introduction of the bipartisan Medical Device Electronic Labeling Act, H.R. 1539, introduced by Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.), Kevin Mullin (D-Calif.), Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas), and Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.)
“Since Congress last addressed device labeling, reliance on online information has expanded astronomically. Consumers, patients, and clinicians increasingly turn to user manuals and instructions online. That makes sense, as online resources are easy for consumers to access and for manufacturers to update.
“This bill would expand access to definitive, expert information about how to use each lifesaving, life-enhancing medtech innovation, direct from the manufacturer, without the need for or delay caused by paper instructions. Electronic labeling will help patients and clinicians use medtech as effectively as possible, achieving the full intended benefits of each innovation. AdvaMed thanks the bill’s sponsors for their valuable work.”
