AdvaMed Praises Gov. Newsom’s Budget Proposal to Expand Coverage of Continuous Glucose Monitors for Diabetes Patients
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a statement today from AdvaMed President and CEO Scott Whitaker, the world’s largest trade association representing medical technology companies and manufacturers praised California Gov. Gavin Newsom for unveiling a budget proposal that calls for expanding Medi-Cal coverage of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) by $12 million.
“Governor Newsom is exactly right to push for expansion of Medi-Cal’s coverage of CGMs. Diabetes has long been one of the most lethal diseases Americans suffer from, and it’s proven to be one of the most dangerous underlying conditions to have if you’re diagnosed with Covid-19,” Whitaker said. “Funding CGMs at a greater level, particularly for the children and underservedpatients Medi-Cal serves, is the right thing to do, and it has the added advantage of being a smart way to reduce overall costs to the health care system. We appreciate the Governor’s action today, as well as those members of the legislature who so passionately advocated for it – particularly Assemblymember Adam Gray – and we hope the state legislature fully funds the budget request later this year. This has long been an AdvaMed priority, and we encourage other states to follow California’s lead in the fight against diabetes.”
